Blank Screen on Chamberlain or LiftMaster Wall Control? Here’s the Fix

If you have a premium Chamberlain or LiftMaster garage door opener, your wall control panel may have a digital screen that shows the time and temperature. A common issue is the screen may go blank and no longer work as intended.

The particular model of wall control we were having issues with is the LiftMaster 880LMW. Here is how we resolved the issue on our unit and what your next step will be if the reset doesn’t work.

Remove Wall Control From the Wall

The first thing you’re going to want to do is flip up the push button to reveal the screw behind it. Once you remove this screw, you can push the wall control upwards to remove it from the wall.

Disconnect Wires on Wall Control

There should be two wires connected to the back of your wall control. Pay attention to which wire is going to the “R” terminal and “W” terminal, as they need to be reinstalled the same way.

Once the wires have been disconnected, the back of your Chamberlain or LiftMaster wall control should look something like the photo above. After disconnecting the wires, wait 30 seconds or so to reconnect the wall control.

Wall Control is Now Reset

In most cases, the act of disconnecting and reconnecting the wires on the back of your Chamberlain or LiftMaster wall control will reset the unit and restore the screen back to factory settings. You will now need to reset the time on the unit and menu functionality will be restored.

Blank Wall Control Screen Not Fixed?

If disconnecting the wires for 30 seconds and reconnecting them does not restore your wall control, you will need to replace the unit. The back off the wall control will have a part number you can use to search online for a replacement.

Conclusion

It is not uncommon to see the screen go blank on a Chamberlain or LiftMaster garage door opener. They have had some issues recently with premature failures on some wall control units.

You can try to reset the unit like we laid out in this article, or replace it if the reset does not work. The wall control will most likely continue to work fine from the open/close button even if the screen remains blank.
