In this article, we will break down the most common ways to quickly identify the model of your garage door or opener. If your garage door does not have any labels at all, then you may have to rely on the trained eye of a garage door technician.

How to Identify Your Garage Door Model Number?

Garage door identification labels and stickers are usually located on the end of the sections.

The most common way to identify the model number on a garage door is to look for a sticker on the end of the sections. The sticker could be on the left or right-hand side, depending on who manufactured the door.

If you find the correct sticker installed by the manufacturer or distributor, it will have all the information you need listed. The size of the door section, color, model, date, and occasionally the garage door company who installed the door.

Out of all the garage door manufacturers, Clopay does the best job of identifying their garage doors with a sticker on the inside face of the door. This sticker will include their PID number along with the serial number for the garage door.

With this information, you will easily be able to identify the exact garage door installed in your home by calling any Clopay distributor and providing these numbers. No one makes it easier than Clopay.

Windsor Garage Doors is a close second behind Clopay when it comes to identifying their garage door sections. They also place a foil sticker on the inside face of the garage door, so you can easily find out which model of door you have.

Identify Wayne Dalton Garage Door Model Number

If you have a newer home installed by a home builder, there is a good chance you might have a Wayne Dalton 9100 garage door. These doors are installed in masses on a national builder’s contract.

The yellow warning label on the inside of the garage door will have the Product ID# on the door, which will help you identify what model of Wayne Dalton door you have.

Where are Garage Door Serial Numbers?

Most manufacturers of garage doors do not list the serial number anywhere on the door sections. As illustrated by the photo above for a CHI door, the size, model, color, style, insulation, and PO# are listed. No serial number.

Clopay is one of the few manufacturers that actually does this, and I’m not certain why. This information can be helpful when trying to source replacement sections after they have been damaged.

Recently, some manufacturers have been printing model and serial numbers on the top and bottom of their garage door section. To see if your garage door has this information, you will need to slowly raise your garage door from the outside and look in between the sections as the garage door opens.

Why Is the Garage Door Model & Serial Important?

Finding the correct make and model of your garage door is important when you are replacing sections. The stamped pattern on the outside of your garage door is different from manufacturer to manufacturer.

Another critical feature of garage door sections is the overlap between the sections. Some manufactures make shiplap, tongue & groove, and pinch free sections which all have a different profile where the sections meet. This is why it’s essential to know the model number.

Is There a Website to Look Up Garage Door Models or Serial Numbers?

No. To identify your garage door by the serial number, you would need to call the manufacturer. There is no central database that houses the serial or model numbers for garage doors.

Chamberlain and LiftMaster model and serial numbers have been consistent over the years as to where you can find them. They are always located behind a light cover on the opposite side of where the circuit board is.

The side of the Motörhead where the wires come in is also where the learn button is located. If you look at the opposite side of the Motörhead, you will find the model and serial number label.

Genie will be a mixed bag as to where you can find the model and serial number on their garage door openers. They have changed their opener lineup so many times, it has been hard to keep up.

A good place to start is to look behind the light cover. This is where most manufactures keep identification labels for their automatic openers.

Identify Linear Model & Serial Number

Older Linear garage door openers had their model numbers posted in plain sight on the back of the unit. This label let you know what model and horsepower the unit was.

Newer units like the Linear LDCO801 opener will have the model and serial number behind the light cover. Linear is starting to discontinue older square body units like the LDO 33 & 50 and moving forward with sleeker openers with DC motors.

How to Find Your Garage Door Remote and Keypad Model Number

If you are looking for the model of your garage door remote, you usually don’t have to go much further than the back of the remote. Most manufacturers will list the date and model number on the back of the remote for reference.

If you need to find out the model number for your outside keypad, you will need to remove it from the garage door jamb, so you can take a look at the back side. The rear of the keypad will have the date and model of your keypad.

I have never understood why the garage door industry has not standardized model and serial number identification on garage doors. Nothing is more frustrating than trying to track down the make and model of a garage door section a customer would like replaced.
