LiftMaster has announced they are introducing a new wall mount garage door opener to the market that will no longer require a cable tension monitor to operate. The Genie Company was the first to introduce this in the residential market with their 6070, 6170, and 6172 models of wall mount openers.

Genie claims to use a “Safe-T-Pulse” system, which features an internal tension monitoring to detect slack in your garage door cables and will stop unsafe operation. LiftMaster has not stated at this time what internal technology they are using to remove the external monitor.

What is a Cable Tension Monitor?

If you currently own a LiftMaster wall mount opener, you probably don’t even know it has a cable monitor. The cable tension monitor is an external spring-loaded arm that makes constant contact with the torsion cable.

The unit plugs into then motor head, and it has a switch on the inside that will activate if there is slack in the cable. The reason this is important is so your opener or door is not damaged if your spring breaks or the cable comes off the drum.

The LiftMaster 98022 wall mount opener will have all the same features as their existing 8500W model. This includes smartphone control with built-in Wi-Fi using their myQ app. The unit also features a timer to close, which is popular, and an integrated battery backup for operation when the power goes out. The same ultra-quiet DC motor used on the previous model is carried over into this unit.

When comparing the specs between the two models, the new LiftMaster 98022 looks to be the same unit as the LiftMaster 8500W wall mount opener we reviewed. The external dimensions and included accessories are the same, minus the external cable tension monitor.

If you currently own the 8500W, there would be no reason to upgrade unless you are having continual issues with the door reverse because the cable monitor is activating. Not having a cable tension monitor in the box will benefit garage door installers greatly during installation. Especially with garage doors that are not running great.

What Does the 98022 Look Like Installed?

Wall mount openers provide a clean installation for modern garages. Because the garage door opener is not hanging from the ceiling, a homeowner can have high lift garage doors installed or a car lift to work on vehicles. The sleek, black design goes well with any garage.

Where Do I Buy the LiftMaster 98022?

At the time of writing this, LiftMaster did not have the 98022 listed on their website. We received the information from one of our distributors, who was informing us on the update. A quick Google search did yield some companies selling the unit, but I’m not certain how credible they are.
